On the 19th September 1879, Blackpool bathed its Promenade in artificial sunlight, provided by eight dynamo electric powered Siemans arc lamps.

This was the first Blackpool Illumination, plus probably the first electric street lighting scheme in the World, and that was fifteen years before the Tower opened.

There are now more than 100 miles of festoon strip along the promenade containing in excess of 1 million bulbs in the latest display.

Hops used are Northdown & Goldings.
