Early on the morning of 5th February 1869, John Deason struck Australian gold just below the surface at Bulldog Gully with his pick axe.

Returning after dark with his co-prospector, Richard Oates, he prised an enormous 210 lb (95 kg.), nugget out of the ground with a crowbar.

The following day the pair took it to the bank in Dunolly and walked away with $10,000, the equivalent of £2 million today.

The 'Welcome Stranger' is the biggest gold nugget ever discovered.
