Shoemaker, Edwin Hughes joined the 13th Dragoons in 1852 and in 1854 charged into the 'Valley of Death' as part of the Light Brigade.

With his horse shot from under him and injuries to his legs he managed to catch a riderless horse and return to his own lines.

Ned served for 33 years and reach the rank of Sgt. Major before dying in Blackpool aged 93 in 1927.
