On the 12th December 1901 a simple radio message from Poldhu in Cornwall was received by Guglielmo Marconi in Newfoundland, 2200 miles away.

Modern day science still does not fully understand how it was achieved given the equipment of the time. But that simple message, two clicks, goes down as one of the great moments of science.

Within a year Marconi was operating ship's radios over a distance of 2000 miles and by the 1920's he had linked the entire British Empire.
