In 1839 The Grand Liverpool Steeplechase was officially run for the first time, although it had been run unofficially for 3 years previously.

At the first brook, Conrad at 20/1, ridden by veteran jockey Captain Martin Becher, pulled up and catapulted Martin into the water.

He stayed down while the other horses leapt over him before emerging to exclaim that he hadn’t realised how filthy water tasted without whisky in it and from that day it has been known as Becher’s Brook, one of the most famous fences in the Grand National.

The hops in this beer are Flyer and Crusader.
