9th November 1989, Gunter Schabowski of the East German Socialist Unity Party, mistakenly delivered a speech saying that with immediate effect East Germans could cross to the West.

Within hours, Starsi Lt Colonel Harald Jaeger had his border crossing beseiged by 20,000 desperate escapees. After getting no guidance from his superiors, Harald saw no alternative to opening up the crossing.

Later, he said "I didn't open the wall, the people that stood there did that. Their will was so great there was no alternative".
