On March 3rd 1893, at the Olympic Athletic Club, San Francisco, newly professional Australian boxer, George Dawson, took on experienced local, Ed Greaney, in a much anticipated match.

Greaney had previously taunted another Australian boxer, Billy Murphy, by calling him a coward if he refused to agree to fight. Dawson was obviously out to put right the slur to his fellow countryman’s name.

Dawson & Greaney faced each other in the ring trading punches until the 3rd round when they simultaneously threw right crosses, catching the other squarely on the jaw.

Both boxers dropped to the canvas in a double knockout and the bout declared a draw.

No trace of any rematch can be found in the records
