John Flamsteed, the son of a Derby maltster, was born on 19th August 1646 in the small Derbyshire village of Denby.

After local schooling he had a period of ill health during which he helped his father in the maltings.

Once recovered he studied at Cambridge with his main interests being Astronomy. This led to King Charles II appointing him as 'The King's Astronomical Observator' i.e. The first Astronomer Royal.

As such, on 10th August 1675, he laid the foundation stone for the Royal Greenwich Observatory.

Hops used are Northdown, Fuggles and Goldings.
