The late Chris Brasher was a prominent figure in British Athletics, for amongst other things, pacing Roger Bannister in the first sub 4 minute mile. He also won Gold at the 1956 Olympics.

A man of great energy and determination, he took part in the 1979 New York Marathon and was so taken by it, he decided London could do something similar.

Through his work on 29th March 1981 the inaugural London Marathon had 'the heart and hospitality to welcome the world'.
