Englishman Joshua Norton arrived in San Francisco in 1849 to engage in business to both make and lose a fortune.

After the loss he dropped out of sight for some years only to surface on the 17th September 1859 as Norton the 1st, the self proclaimed Emperor of the U.S.

For 21 years he paraded the city streets in hand-me-down military uniforms to inspect the trams, return Policemen’s salutes and publish imperial edicts before passing away in 1880 to be mourned by thousands .
