The appropriately named Ronald E.L. Beere was the first person to take and pass a driving test in the U.K. in March 1935.

Prior to this licences were issued without needing a test. But the increase in motoring and the subsequent accidents necessitated it's introduction.

Obviously an original 'petrol-head' Ronald had already gained his pilot's licence in 1930 and he subsequently won a flying competition at the opening of Gatwick Airport.

He survived flying his aircraft into the ground in 1936, before finally losing his life in a 1938 aircrash

Hops used are English Flyer and Pioneer.
