On 27th December 1890, the Barbarian Club Touring Side played their inaugural game of rugby at Friary Field Hartlepool.

The Baa-baa's, as they became affectionately known were the brainchild of Percy Carpmael, who aimed for a cosmopolitan membership 'with no discrimination for colour or creed'.

To date they have included players from 27 different countries along with our own Burton man, Frank Evershed, an 1889-93 England International.

Percy made a unique contribution to sport and touchingly he passed away on the 46th anniversary of that first game, when his team had beaten Hartlepool Rovers 9 - 4

Hops used are Challenger and Waimea.
