Maurice Wilks, chief Rover car designer and part-time farmer, was looking to replace his ageing wartime farm Jeep.

He designed a replacement using many Rover car parts and his first 'Rover for the Land' was unveiled at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show.

What was meant to be a stopgap vehicle took the show by storm and sold 3000 in it's first year, a remarkable number for it's time.

By the time it ceased production this year over 2 million vehicles had rolled off the production line.
